OCALA, FL (352today.com) – For anyone who has ever fried a turkey for Thanksgiving, you know the biggest question is what to do with all that oil once the holiday is over.

The City of Ocala wants to help you protect your pipes by recycling your cooking oil after the holiday.

Ocala’s Water Resources Department is hosting a cooking oil recycling day on Monday, Nov. 27, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park located at 2105 NW 21 Street.

The recycling day is designed to allow you to safely and easily dispose of your cooking oil once you’ve had your fill of Thanksgiving dinner and your guests have gone home.

You are only allowed to bring cooking oil and it must be sealed inside a container.

Here are the steps on how to recycle your cooking oils:

  • Obtain a plastic container or jug with a lid.
  • Allow the oil to cool and then pour the used oil into the container.
  • Store it in a safe place.
  • Bring the full container to the recycling location.

“Recycling cooking oil reduces the amount of oil being poured down the drain and limits the environmental impact of oil being dumped outside,” shared the city in a Facebook post.

The city says pouring fats, oils, and grease down your drain can affect water flow and can also cause potential sewage issues.
