GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – As Hurricane Milton moves out of the area, emergency response teams are actively assessing the damage and ensuring public safety.
Here’s what the City of Gainesville wants you to know about today’s ongoing recovery efforts:
Wind Advisory in Effect
The final wind bands from Hurricane Milton will linger throughout the day. A wind advisory has been issued, so expect breezy and rainy conditions. Stay cautious, as these conditions can still cause hazards.
City Inspections Underway
City staff have begun inspecting critical infrastructure, including roads, stormwater systems, municipal buildings, parks, and nature trails. Please avoid these areas while inspections are ongoing.
Road Safety Reminder
The city asks that all residents give emergency vehicles the right of way and drive carefully. Many evacuees will be navigating unfamiliar streets, and debris like fallen limbs could be present on roadways.
Trash Collection Delays
The city says that trash and recycling collection scheduled for today, Oct. 10, has been suspended. Collection will resume on Saturday. Disaster debris contractors, who have already removed over 4,300 cubic yards of yard waste from Hurricane Helene, will continue operations tomorrow, Oct. 11.
Transit Updates
Bus fares are waived for today as the Regional Transit System (RTS) operates on a reduced service schedule. Full service will resume tomorrow. For details, visit the RTS website.
Facility Closures
City offices, pools, and other facilities remain closed today but will reopen tomorrow, Oct. 11. Parks are also off-limits as crews work to inspect trees for weakened limbs that could fall.
Flood Reporting and Safety
If you run into any floodwaters, avoid them as they may contain pollutants and other hazards. Report flooding, blocked streets, or urgent issues by calling 352.334.5070 or using the myGNV app. For storm-related service requests, visit the city’s emergency planning maps online.
