GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) says they shot and injured a man armed with a hedge trimmer.

Police say the shooting happened on Saturday around 6:00 p.m. when officers were called to a home in the area of 3400 NW 21st Place.

GPD says a 911 caller stated they had been threatened by a man with a chainsaw.

Police say their preliminary investigation indicates that the man refused to comply with officers’ commands and that several attempts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful.

GPD says the man lunged toward the officers, forcing them to pull back. They say that’s when one officer fired, hitting the man multiple times.

The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police have not released the man’s identity but say he will be charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer when he’s released.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard policy.
