GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – A number of Gainesville restaurants and eateries closed in 2025, marking a challenging year for both national chains and long-standing local favorites. Rising costs, shifting dining patterns and corporate restructuring contributed to the departure of several establishments that had served the community for years.
Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar
The Applebee’s at 7441 W. Newberry Road closed in May after a decade of operation. The national chain, known for burgers, pasta and late-night specials, removed its signage and posted a note on the location’s door thanking customers and directing them to other nearly locations. Its closure mirrors broader retrenchment by Applebee’s as the brand consolidates under competitive pressures.
Bahama Breeze Island Grille
Bahama Breeze, the Caribbean-inspired restaurant at 3989 Plaza Blvd. closed in May as part of a nationwide reduction in the chain’s footprint. The parent company, Darden Restaurants, said the closure allowed it to focus on high-performing units amid declining sales and a competitive casual-dining environment.
Gator’s Dockside
Gator’s Dockside at 3833 NW 9th Blvd. closed in December. The restaurant, which opened nearly a decade earlier, thanked customers in a statement. Customers can still visit the Ocala location at 3920 SW 42nd St.
Ichiban Sushi
Ichiban Sushi located at 4928 NW 39th Avenue closed permanently in June following health inspection issues that led to temporary shutdowns and ultimately an inability to reopen. The building is set to be the second location of Sohao Café.
T.G.I Friday’s
The T.G.I Fridays at 3075 Clark Butler Blvd. in the Butler North Shopping Center suddenly closed its doors in early March. A note on the door informed patrons of its permanent closure. The location’s shutdown came amid Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings by the Dallas-based parent company and a series of closures across the franchise.
Subway
The Subway sandwich shop at 1805 SW 13th Street also shut its doors in May. A sign on the front door noted the closure while encouraging customers to visit other nearby locations. The sandwich chain has been closing underperforming locations nationwide as part of a long-term franchise optimization trend.
Wahoo Seafood Grill
Wahoo Seafood Grille, located at 3833 NW 97th Blvd., closed in May after a decade of operation. The restaurant announced the decision on social media, thanking patrons for years of support. Industry factors such as rising food and labor costs, shifting customer preferences and competitive pressure on sit-down seafood restaurants contributed to the closure. The brand continues to operate a location in Tallahassee.
