GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – Emmanuel Garilus, a saxophonist from Gainesville, is taking his musical talent to new heights, having won two rounds of the nation’s longest-running talent competition, Amateur Night at the Apollo.
After his victories, Garilus is set to return to Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater on Nov. 13 for the semifinals. Should he place in the top three, he will compete in the grand finale on June 25, 2025, with a chance to win the $20,000 grand prize.
Garilus began his journey by auditioning for Gainesville’s One Nation One Project (ONOP) Talent Search, led by ONOP GNV Artistic Director and long-time Amateur Night producer, Marion J. Caffey. The ONOP initiative is a two-year project aimed at reducing gun violence by promoting youth health and well-being through culture and the arts. The talent search was a cornerstone of the city’s celebration, marking the end of this impactful program. Garilus, along with fellow winner Tailyn Jones, received an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to perform at the Apollo.
In fewer than eight weeks, Garilus found himself performing on the Apollo stage, famously known for hosting “The World’s Toughest Audience.” For his first performance, Garilus chose Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” aiming to connect with the audience through the emotional power of his saxophone.
“When choosing the song,” Garilus says. “I was looking for something with deep emotional impact that also gave me the chance to express its power through my playing.”
The Apollo audience, which determines the winner based on the loudness of their cheers, embraced Garilus’ performance, singing along and shouting in approval. The saxophonist recalls the suspense as he waited for the results, unaware he had won until the host announced his victory.
Reflecting on the experience, Garilus shares how life-changing the trip was, not only for his career but also for the exposure to New York City’s culture. He explored Harlem, captured its essence through photos and videos, and even sampled the iconic “chopped cheese” sandwich.
“My career goal as a musician is to continue playing larger arenas while also leading others in worship through my music. This talent search has provided me with invaluable exposure, and I’m confident it’s brought me closer to realizing my aspirations,” Garilus says.
Meanwhile, dancer Tailyn Jones, the second winner of Gainesville’s Theater Talent Search, is scheduled to make her Amateur Night debut on Dec. 18.
