OCKLAWAHA, FL (352today.com) – Gator Joe’s Beach Bar & Grill on Lake Weir is making a few changes this summer to help improve the beach-going experience for guests, especially on busy weekends.

Starting this season, beach access will now require a wristband on Saturdays and Sundays, available cash-only at the entrance. The wristbands come with a small per-person fee that applies only to the beach, not the restaurant. Dining at Gator Joe’s remains free and open to all, as usual.

“A lot of people come out, cause problems, and don’t buy anything,” says Taylor Adkins of Ocala. “They just want to hang out on the beach for free. I think the new policies are fair.”

As part of the new system, picnic tables on the beach are available for $20 which includes umbrella and table service.

Richie Boyd of Silver Springs Shores says the move makes sense. “Some people just show up and put their stuff on the tables but don’t ever use them,” he said. “I think it’ll work out better for families like [my girlfriend] and me. It’ll weed out the folks taking advantage of the space.”

To free up more room for beachgoers, tents are no longer allowed, though umbrellas are still welcome. The beach will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closing around sunset.

Lisa Varner of Ocala said she understands the need for the change. “Gator Joe’s is a private, for-profit business so I understand why they put this policy in place,” she said. “There are several public parks on Lake Weir to enjoy the water. Carney Island, Hampton Beach, and Kiwanis Beach are all open to the public for nominal fees.”
