LECANTO, FL (352today.com) – Whether it’s tires, paint, car batteries or cleaning supplies, Citrus County residents looking to get some non-standard garbage off their hands can drop it off at the Citrus County Landfill for free during some upcoming events.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Disposal Program allows assessed households in Citrus County to drop off up to 10 gallons (or 60 pounds) of HHW for proper disposal on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dropping off your HHW is free; however, if your drop-off exceeds 60 pounds, every additional pound costs 35 cents.

Additionally, coming up next month is an extra drop-off day on Saturday, Oct. 28. The county holds these quarterly events on Saturdays so residents who work during the week have an opportunity to bring in their HHW. Because of this, visitors should anticipate longer lines and increased wait times.

What items count as HHW?

  • Flammables, combustibles and explosives (ammunition, fireworks, paint thinner, gasoline and other fuels, etc.)
  • Poisons and pesticides (bug sprays, repellents, baits, flea shampoos, etc.)
  • Painting and homeowner supplies (liquid paint, adhesives, roofing tar, etc.)
  • Automotive products (starting fluids, aerosols, parts cleaners, etc.)
  • Lawn and garden products (fertilizer, pool chlorine, weed killers, etc.)
  • Corrosives and cleaning products (ammonia cleaners, bleach, bathroom cleaners, etc.)

A full list of accepted items is available on the Citrus Board of County Commissioners website.

Businesses and unassessed households can also drop off HHW during weekly collection times, or they can call the landfill at 352-527-7670 to schedule an early morning appointment. Some waste products may incur additional fees.

The landfill will also be hosting Waste Tire Amnesty events this month. On Thursday, Sept. 21 through Saturday, Sept. 23, Citrus County households can discard up to 25 tires per resident from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, or from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Passenger car and truck tires will be accepted for free; however, tires from commercial shops or businesses, tires with rims, oversized tires and agricultural or industrial tires will not be accepted.

Since vehicle tires are a common breeding ground for mosquitos, according to a statement from the Citrus County Division of Solid Waste Management, mosquito control will be provided as necessary.

Photo ID is required. Residents can call 352-527-7670 for more information.
