TALLAHASSEE, FL (352today.com) – With Hurricane Milton expected to make landfall in just 48 hours, Governor Ron DeSantis held a news conference pleading with Florida residents to take the final steps to protect themselves before the storm hits.

Here are the major points from the update:

Tuesday is the Last Day to Prepare

Governor DeSantis emphasized that Tuesday is the final day for residents to complete storm preparations. Hurricane Milton is currently a Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph, expected to weaken to Category 3 before it reaches the Gulf Coast on Wednesday night. He urged everyone to finalize plans, including evacuation if necessary.

Evacuations and Heavy Traffic

Evacuations were ordered Monday, and there has been a 150% increase in traffic on Florida highways. Residents should expect longer travel times. Tolls on highways have been suspended to ease evacuation efforts.

Uber and Shuttle Services for Evacuation Assistance

The state has partnered with Uber to provide free rides for residents in evacuation zones heading to shelters. Shuttle services are also available for those needing assistance in relocating to safety.

Shelters and Pet-Friendly Options

Twenty-six counties have opened shelters, including pet-friendly options and special assistance shelters. Four additional state-supported shelters, with capacity for thousands, will be announced Tuesday in Polk, Hillsborough, and Pasco Counties as last-resort locations.

National Guard and Power Restoration Efforts

Florida has deployed 8,000 National Guardsmen and 37,000 linemen ready to restore power after the storm. 2,000 state troopers are assisting with evacuations, and 24 search-and-rescue aircraft are on standby. 1.2 million gallons of diesel and gasoline are being delivered to ensure fuel availability.

Debris Cleanup from Previous Storm

In preparation for Hurricane Milton, over 300 dump trucks have been deployed to remove debris from Hurricane Helene, with 1,200 truckloads of debris cleared in the past 48 hours. Local governments are encouraged to continue cleanup efforts to prevent additional hazards.

Power Outages and Safety Precautions

Residents are urged to prepare for potential power outages, restock hurricane kits, and fill gas tanks. Officials also advised moving electric vehicles away from homes, as exposure to saltwater during the storm could cause fires.

Governor DeSantis stressed that with assets from multiple states and an unprecedented level of preparation, Florida is ready to face Hurricane Milton, but residents must act swiftly to protect themselves and their families.
