HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is handling what appears to be a bizarre case of murder-suicide. Deputies arrested a man they believe attacked and killed his acquaintance along with another man who then killed himself.

On Monday, Jan. 15, the sheriff’s office says they responded to a home on Elkin Avenue in Spring Hill to do a wellbeing check on William Scott Trudell. They say they received a phone call from one of his family member’s stating that Dakota Lee Croft may have killed Trudell.

When deputies got to the home, they made contact with a man identified as 33-year-old Dustin McMillan. They say he initially locked the front door and did not allow deputies to enter the home.

When one of the deputies walked to the backyard, they say they found Croft hanging from a tree. After further searching the area, they found Trudell’s body lying on the ground in a nearby wooded area. HCSO deputies say they also noticed “drag marks” from the side garage door to where they found Trudell’s body.

While questioning McMillan, they say he told them that he and Croft had bought alcohol earlier that day and had been drinking. Deputies say that he and Croft put together a plan to attack Trudell. According to the sheriff’s office, McMillan also told deputies Croft was upset with Trudell for disrespecting women in the home and being a ‘cop caller.’

HCSO says McMillan told deputies that when Trudell entered the garage, they “ambushed and killed him.”

Shortly after, deputies say a family member entered the garage, found Trudell’s body lying on the floor and immediately left.

Deputies say McMillan told them he and Croft drug Trudell’s body to the nearby wooded area and then began to clean up the garage to get rid of any evidence. Shortly after that, they believe that’s when Croft hung himself.

Deputies arrested McMillan and charged him with one count of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He is being held at the Hernando County Detention Center without a bond.

They are asking anyone with any information regarding the case to contact Hernando County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-990-8477. You can also submit a tip online here.
