OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As fall fastly approaches, it’s time to get into the spooky mood. Here are some classic series, new movies and events to keep this season entertaining. In addition to enjoy stand-alone films in the theatres the Marion Theatre is hosting Grindhouse 7 for gore movie lovers to get a taste of eerie spooks. The EPIC Theatres of Ocala is hosting Flashback Cinema where cult classics meet the big screens once again.
Scream (1996 – 2022)
Scream is a popular and classic slasher horror film series that follows a serial killer who targets a group of teenagers for various reason throughout the franchise. It originated in 1996 with its latest installment, Scream VI, released in 2022 and another, Scream VII, to come in February of 2026.
The Scream series is a great watch for thrilling fun with friends, older family members or to get into the Halloween spirit.
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984 – 2010)
Nightmare on Elm Street is another popular franchise with nine installments with the first one released in 1984 and the latest one released in 2010. The movies follow Fred “Freddy” Kruger (Robert Englund), a disfigured killer who haunts dreams and brings the terror to real life.
Though not all the movies were well-received by critics, it’s a good watch for the fall season with pumpkin spice and no lights.
The Paranormal Activity (2007 – 2021)
The Paranormal Activity series started as a small production filmed in director Oren Peli’s house with almost all the characters’ names being those of the actors. The first movie was released in 2007 following a couple who began being haunted by supernatural forces and setting up cameras to catch it. Although the series is well-known for its poor quality, unlikable characters, lackluster plot and more, fans of the franchise praise its charm, found footage style and eerie atmosphere.
For fans of the franchise, this is a fun rewatch and for newcomers to the series, this is a chance to get into a spooky mood while exploring a new franchise.
Sleepy Hallow (1999)
Sleepy Hallow, directed by Tim Burton and produced by Paramount Pictures, is a rendition of the classic The Legend of Sleep Hallow. A detective, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is sent to investigate a stream of murders and must decide if a serial killer is on the loose or if a supernatural force is at play.
This is the perfect movie to get into the Halloween mood with eerie enjoyment and fall themed snacks.
The Conjuring (2013 – 2025)
TheConjuring series is a long stream of movies based on the lives of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators called to what they claim was one of their most extreme cases of paranormal activity. The series consists of four The Conjuring films, two The Nun films, three Annabelle films and The Curse of La Llorona making 10 films in the entire series of Ed and Lorraine Warren based films.
This series is eerie and unsettling from start to finish with the most recent installment in the series released on Sept. 5. With the new film, The Conjuring: Last Rites recent release, this fall season is the perfect time to binge the series and get up to date on the sinister happenings of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
New movies coming to theatres for fall frights
Him (2025)
Him is a Monkeypaw Production psychological horror and sports movie directed by Justin Tipping. The movie is about Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), a quarterback who was attacked by a fan resulting in a serious brain injury and sending Cade through a dark journey.
The movie was released in theatres on Sept. 19.
The Strangers – Chapter 2 (2025)
After the success of The Strangers – Chapter 1, a horror film where a couple, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) break down in a small town and get hunted by three masked killers. In this sequel, a Lionsgate horror film directed by Renny Harlin, moviegoers revisit Maya and explore new ways the masked killers affect her life.
This movie is set to be released in theatres on Sept. 26.
Bone Lake (2024)
Bone Lake, produced by Mickey Liddell and directed by Mercedes Morgan, follows the story of couple, Sage (Maddie Hasson) and Diego (Marco Pigossi) going to an isolated cabin for a romantic retreat wound up sharing the cabin with another couple. As tensions rise, the couple uncovers long forgotten secrets.
It premiered in theatres on Sept. 21, 2024, but is set to have its official theatrical release on Oct. 3, 2025.
Black Phone 2 (2025)
The first Black Phone followed Finney Blake (Mason Thames) who was kidnapped by a masked killer, The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). Through a black rotary phone, he was able to speak to the voices of the deceased victims of the killer and was able to escape using their clues. Now, Blake is back with his sister, Gwen Blake (Madeleine McGraw), in Black Phone 2, produced by Universal Pictures and Blum House and directed by Scott Derrickson. The Blakes are back for another horror-filled showdown mixing supernatural and human threats alike.
The film is set to be released in theatres on Oct. 17
Frankenstein (2025)
A new adaptation of the classic gothic novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, is coming to theatres. Frankenstein, produced and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, is about a scientist, Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Issac), who brings life to a monstrous creature (Jacob Elordi) made from multiple body parts that Frankenstein collected.
Although it premiered in April of this year, there will be a showing on oct. 17 in theatres.
Keeper (2025)
Keeper is an Oddfellows horror movie directed by Osgood Perkins about Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and Malcom (Rossif Sutherland) who go to a secluded cabin for their anniversary. When Malcom leaves unexpectedly, Liz navigates strange happenings while uncovering the dark history of the cabin.
This film is set to be released in theatres on Nov. 14.
