NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA (352today.com) – As Hurricane Milton intensifies and threatens to impact regions far beyond its center, boat owners need to act fast.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) warns that the storm could cause widespread damage, similar to what was seen during Hurricane Ian. Here’s a list of critical steps to secure your vessel and minimize the risk of damage:

Move Your Vessel Out of the Water

If your boat can be trailered, remove it from the water and move it to a safe, elevated location far from tidal areas. This applies to all watercraft, including kayaks.

Double and Secure Lines if Your Boat Must Stay Docked

For vessels that must remain in a marina, double all dock lines and use cross-spring lines to secure it. Attach lines high on the pilings to allow for tidal surges.

Anchor in a Protected Area

If anchoring, find a sheltered spot and use multiple anchors with a 10:1 scope. Remove any canvas coverings and sails to prevent damage.

Inspect Your Mooring

Make sure your mooring can handle the weight of your vessel. Inspect the chains, swivels, and other components, and double up on the pendant for added security.

Chafe-Proof All Lines

Prevent chafing by wrapping lines with tape, rags, or rubber hoses where they pass through chocks. Install fenders to protect your boat from rubbing against docks or pilings.

Charge Batteries for Bilge Pumps

Make sure your boat’s batteries are fully charged to run automatic bilge pumps. Consider backup batteries to keep the pumps functioning throughout the storm.

Evacuate and Never Stay Onboard During the Storm

Do not risk your life by staying on your boat during a hurricane. Follow mandatory marina evacuations and leave the area.
