CITRUS COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The State Attorney’s Office of the Fifth Judicial Circuit says an Inverness man was found guilty of a deadly hit-and-run incident in 2021.
Authorities say it only took a jury 45 minutes of deliberation on Tuesday to find 37-year-old Mark Anthony Wieder guilty on charges of failing to stop at a crash involving a death and leaving a crash involving property damages.
Prosecutors say the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) arrested Wieder on April 7, 2022, more than a year after the hit-and-run accident that killed 45-year-old Kathryn Gosman. The State Attorney’s Office shared in a Facebook post that she was a ‘dedicated worker’ at Angelo’s Pizzaria and had just gotten out of her car to deliver pizzas when she was hit and killed. It was an extra shift she picked up to help pay for a trip to see her sick mother.
They say she was thrown more than 100 feet from where the crash occurred.
Further investigation by FHP revealed that Wieder’s GMC Sierra pickup truck displayed damage that was consistent with the crash. A paint analysis also provided more convincing evidence.
Investigators say Wieder told them that he thought he hit a deer. They say he failed to stop and inspect the damages and then went to a store without reporting the incident.
“The gravity of a fatal hit-and-run cannot be overstated. Tragedies like that of Kathryn Gosman, not only result in the loss of a precious life but leave families shattered,” commented William “Bill” Gladson, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney. “Those responsible will eventually recognize the seriousness of their actions and should prepare to face the full consequences of such.”
