OCALA, FL (352today.com) – It’s always difficult to say goodbye. When Ocala Metro CEP President and CEO Kevin Sheilley announced his resignation on Dec. 19, 2024, to accept a similar position in Charleston, SC, it sent shockwaves through the community. After 12 years of transformative leadership, Sheilley left an indelible mark on Ocala and Marion County.
A Morning of Recognition and Gratitude
On Jan. 15, 2025, community leaders gathered at the Ocala Metro CEP ExCEPtional Morning Breakfast at the Reilly Arts Center to celebrate Sheilley’s contributions. Marion County Board of County Commissioners Chair Kathy Bryant shared heartfelt memories from the early days of Sheilley’s tenure.

“I remembered when you called me and asked me to do that first presentation at the very first CEP Breakfast,” said Bryant. “It was certainly an exciting time, and I was so excited to do it. And it was an extremely exciting time within our community.”

Bryant recounted the economic struggles Marion County faced when Sheilley arrived—high unemployment, widespread foreclosures, and significant property value losses. “Our community leaders, the county and the city, the private sector, we knew we had to do something different. We knew the key to success was to do something different and diversify our economic base.”
Revitalizing Economic Development
Bryant highlighted the formation of the Chamber and Economic Partnership (CEP) after the disbandment of previous economic organizations. “And then they brought us Kevin, and we are so very fortunate,” she said. She praised Sheilley’s push for shovel-ready projects, despite skepticism, crediting his leadership for Marion County’s economic turnaround.
Bryant presented Sheilley with a horse sculpture and plaque bearing the Marion County seal, expressing gratitude on behalf of the county. “You have definitely left your mark on this community, and we will forever be grateful. We are going to miss you. It’s truly going to be a loss. We wish you all the best.”
City of Ocala’s Tribute
City of Ocala Mayor Ben Marciano shared how former Mayor Kent Guinn and others advocated for Sheilley to receive a key to the city. “When we think of our community, your fingerprints are all over it,” said Marciano, emphasizing Sheilley’s integrity and leadership.
Former Mayor Guinn presented Sheilley with framed photos commemorating the CEP’s achievements, with brass plates inscribed “Moving Forward” and “Mission Accomplished.” Guinn recalled endorsing Sheilley during the hiring process, stating, “Hire that guy. And he did.”
Legacy of Economic Diversification
Sheilley’s tenure saw significant economic diversification in Ocala and Marion County. Unemployment, once at 14.5%, dropped as the region’s economy expanded beyond its construction roots.
CEP Board member Angie Lewis reflected on Sheilley’s influence during challenging times. She credited his advocacy for local sales taxes and swift action during the pandemic as pivotal to the community’s resilience. “Kevin inspired me to stay,” Lewis said. “He rallied his team and focused on supporting local businesses during unforeseen times.”
A Heartfelt Farewell
The event’s emotional tone underscored Sheilley’s profound connection with the community. He thanked his wife Lisa and family for their support. “This community takes second to no one,” Sheilley said. “This community will continue to have a phenomenal future—an exceptional future.”
