OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Last Leaf, a six-year-old mare who earned more than $622,000 on the racetrack, winning seven races and finishing in the money another 13 times from 30 starts, was the sales topper at the 2025 Ocala Breeders Sales Company’s Mixed Winter Sale, held on Jan. 28, 2025.

The 5-time stakes winner was consigned by Gilberto Martinez and brought $140,000, purchased by Marette Farrell, agent for San Antonio, Texas-based owner Joe Peacock Jr., Senor’s Senorita’s.

Gilberto Martinez started his business, G. Martinez Training, about four years ago, breaking and training horses for the racetrack. He began consigning horses to the sales just two years ago. Prior to that, Martinez worked for Tony Everard at New Episode Farm in Ocala, where he gained a strong foundation and learned a great deal from the veteran horseman.

“She’s a very nice filly,” said Martinez. “She was a good racehorse. We were expecting a little bit more. She’s going to be a nice broodmare. She has great conformation. She’s sound.”

The third highest-selling horse was a colt by Yaupon, consigned by Richard Kent’s Kaizen Sales. This yearling and racing prospect brought $95,000 and was purchased by Sea Warrior Stables LLC.

“He’s a very athletic, smooth walking colt,” said Richard Kent of Kaizen Sales. “He reminded me of Uncle Mo (the 2010 champion two-year-old colt) because he had a lot of Uncle Mo in him (in his pedigree), though not as much Discreet Cat. We showed him well over 100 times. He just kept showing himself off well. I think he’s going to mature into a spectacular full yearling.”

The Florida-bred colt has local roots, spending much of his formative early days at a Morriston thoroughbred facility known for producing quality racehorses that have gone on to great success at the track.

“Good things came together,” said Kent. “He was raised out at Pleasant Acres. They raise a very good horse. Joe and Helen Barbazon. That always helps when you get a horse from people who have a reputation for raising very good horses. I think that goes a long way too. I place a lot of importance on where a horse is raised.”

The second highest-priced horse at the sale was a yearling filly by McKinzie, consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield Sales in Morriston. She sold for $97,000, with Lambholm as agent signing the sales ticket.

A total of 213 horses sold at the 2025 Winter Mixed Sale, bringing in $3,108,700. The average price was $14,595, and the median price was $7,500.
