CROSS CITY, FL (352today.com) – Cross City police officers and Dixie County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call Saturday around 8:30 p.m., in reference to an armed man who was apparently suffering from a mental health crisis.

However, what they say happened next at the area of Southeast 39th Avenue, was unsettling and disturbing. It turned out to be more than just officers serving a warrant for an arrest. They went into the situation not knowing the suspect’s mental state, demeanor but with the understanding he possessed a firearm.

Cross City Police say the man took the first responders by surprise, ambushing them by firing his gun in the direction of the officers. Police say officers engaged the man by returning fire, incapacitating him in the process.
