OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As the warm weather makes its return and families head outdoors to enjoy Florida’s lakes, rivers, and springs, it’s not uncommon to spot an alligator, even if only from a distance.

Alligators are more active during the warmer months, particularly as mating season begins. These reptiles are found in all 67 Florida counties and are part of a stable population estimated at 1.3 million. While the chances of serious injury from an alligator encounter remain low, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is asking that you take simple precautions to stay safe.

The FWC recommends keeping a safe distance if you see an alligator and avoiding interactions of any kind. If an alligator is posing a concern, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286), and a licensed trapper will respond.

As a preventive measure, keep pets leashed and away from water’s edge, and never swim outside designated areas or during nighttime hours. It’s also important to never feed alligators – not only is it illegal, but it also teaches them to associate humans with food.
