SUMMERFIELD, FL (352today.com) – A 53-year-old man died Sunday morning in a crash on U.S. Highway 301 in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
FHP officials said the crash happened just before 9 a.m. when a 78-year-old man driving a white Hyundai Elantra attempted to turn left from Southeast 147th St. onto U.S. 301. As he turned, a white Ford Escape traveling south on the highway struck the back of the Hyundai.

The impact sent the Ford off the road and into a tree, which then fell onto the vehicle, killing the driver at the scene, authorities said.
The driver of the Hyundai refused medical transport. The crash remains under investigation.
