MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Marion County Animal Services is appealing to the community for help in addressing a pressing crisis. Currently housing 300 dogs—far exceeding its capacity—the shelter is calling on residents to adopt or foster dogs before the holiday weekend.
Why the Urgency?
“Right now, we have more dogs than we have space for. Finding even temporary foster homes can make all the difference for their well-being,” explained Animal Services Director Kyra Lynch.
How You Can Help
- Adopt a Dog: Adoption fees are waived for dogs over seven years old during National Adopt a Senior Dog Month. This makes it an excellent time to find a loving companion while helping reduce overcrowding.
- Foster a Dog: Fostering provides temporary relief for dogs, giving them a home environment where they can thrive. Supplies and veterinary care are fully covered by the shelter, making it an easy and impactful way to help. “Even a week or two in a foster home can provide a dog with comfort and attention they wouldn’t get in a crowded shelter,” Lynch emphasized.
A Perfect Match for Every Home
From energetic puppies to gentle senior dogs, the shelter has a wide variety of personalities to fit any household. By adopting or fostering, you’re not only changing a dog’s life but also alleviating the strain on shelter resources, enabling staff to care for incoming animals.
Make a Difference This Thanksgiving
