MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announces the passing of Retired Major Patti Lumpkin, who served the department and community for over three decades. Major Lumpkin passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024.

Major Lumpkin’s journey in law enforcement began in 1975 when she joined the MCSO as a secretary. The department says that she went on to break significant gender barriers, becoming the department’s first female road deputy and later ascending to the rank of major – achievements that established her as a pioneer for women in law enforcement.

Throughout her 35-year career until her retirement in 2010, MCSO says that Major Lumpkin demonstrated exceptional dedication, courage, and leadership that helped shape the department’s future.

“Though I did not have the honor of working alongside Major Lumpkin, I know her influence runs deep in this agency,” says Sheriff Billy Woods. “She paved the way for many and set a standard of excellence we will strive to carry forward. Major Lumpkin will be missed by all of us here at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.”

MCSO shares that Major Lumpkin’s legacy of resilience, compassion, and commitment continues to inspire current and future generations of law enforcement officers. Her groundbreaking career opened doors for countless women in law enforcement and set new standards for excellence in public service.
