MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – A Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) captain who suffered severe burns while on the job is celebrating a major milestone in his recovery.

MCFR announced Wednesday morning that Capt. Chris Trubelhorn was released from the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital after nearly two months in the burn center.

Trubelhorn was severely burned while battling a house fire in Silver Springs on November 1.

Trubelhorn’s journey up to his release from the hospital on Tuesday has not been easy. The department frequently posted progress reports detailing at least six surgeries since his injury.

MCFR Fire Chief James Banta described Trubelhorn’s journey as ‘courageous.’

“Throughout his career, Chris has shown strength and determination, we expect nothing less from him now. As he continues to heal at home, we ask that everyone continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” stated Banta.

“His treatment has faced multiple challenges and setbacks but, thankfully, his best Christmas present arrived a day late by being released home to his family,” said the Professional Firefighters of Marion County (PFFMC) in a Facebook post.

The PFFMC is the firefighting union and represents 554 active and retired members from MCFR.

“While released from the hospital to return home, Capt. Trubelhorn still has a substantial road of recovery ahead of him until he brings his experience back to MCFR,” said PFFMC. “While the task may seem daunting or scary to some, Capt. Trubelhorn is committed to returning to his calling.”

The fire department says MCFR will be there to assist Trubelhorn with whatever he needs throughout his long journey of recovery ahead.
