MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – UPDATE: The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) confirmed that the man riding the dirt bike was 26-year-old Rasheem Edwards. MCSO says Edwards, who was in critical condition died from his injuries at the hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a deputy-involved shooting.

The shooting involves the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and happened Tuesday, Oct. 24, around 7:15 p.m.

MCSO says a deputy tried to pull over a man on a dirt bike near the intersection of SE Maricamp Road and Emerald Road. Deputies say the man took off running toward a field where a youth sports practice was being held.

While running, deputies say the man reached for a gun that he was openly carrying on his hip.

That’s when a deputy opened fire, hitting the man.

Emergency crews transported the man to a hospital where around 9 p.m. MCSO said he was in critical condition. They have not released his identity so 352today has not been able to independently confirm his condition.

MCSO says the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard practice while a shooting is investigated.
