OCALA, FL (352today.com) – When you think of your favorite banket to curl up with on the couch, you probably picture something soft, warm, and just heavy enough to keep you cozy. What you probably don’t imagine is that it might smother you in hugs and kisses – unless that blanket is actually Shelly.
Shelly is a 5-year-old female dog who has been with Marion County Animal Services (MCAS) since September of 2024. She has a big, sweet personality and is described as the “biggest lap dog ever.” Shelly is very comfortable around new people and adapts well to new surroundings.
During her visit with the 352today staff, one thing was clear: if you pet her, you’re her friend.
Shelly is hoping to spend her summer with a big backyard where she can run to her heart’s content, splash in some water, and end the day with plenty of belly rubs. While she doesn’t mind other dogs, she’s mainly a people pup.
After spending some time in foster homes, MCAS staff say that her behavior is essentially the same as it is in the shelter. If she’s being loved on, her smile won’t leave her face.

Shelly is also a favorite at MCAS’s monthly Pack Walks, where shelter dogs enjoy a break from the kennel and get to explore Silver Springs State Park. Pack Walks happen on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next one is on Sunday, May 25, starting at 9 a.m.
Volunteers are encouraged to attend, just bring $2 for park admission and a willingness to make a dog’s day. These events are a great way to give shelter dogs a much-needed change of scenery, help them meet new people, and maybe even find their forever home.
It’s Spring Fling at MCAS, and all adoptions are just $5 for a limited time. You can see all of their adoptable animals at marionfl.org/animal.
