WILDWOOD, FL (352today.com) – The City of Wildwood is taking additional steps to shore up a road in The Villages after it caved in this summer.

Wildwood officials say they are implementing engineering recommendations to further stabilize the public right-of-way on Scardino Street. They say this decision was made after a supplementary geotechnical investigation.

“An estimated 400 to 500 cubic yards of concrete will be injected at 21 additional sites, adding to the 351.3 cubic yards injected at 21 initial sites last month,” the city said in a release. The concrete was injected at depths ranging from 25 to 55 feet.

On Aug. 14, a section of roadway and part of a private driveway collapsed, leaving holes at 5980 Scardino Street in The Village of Monarch Grove. Following that, the city issued an emergency authorization to begin geotechnical testing to determine the exact location and extent of the collapse.

Since the injections, the city says another depression was identified north of the grouted area, adjacent to a stormwater structure in the road prompting the city to authorize a secondary geophysical investigation of the entire public right-of-way.

According to a release from the city, the tests indicated the depressions were caused by one or more uncontrollable natural events and not by the stormwater structure nor any other public utility infrastructure.

“We were disheartened to learn of additional areas of concern but remain aggressively focused on protecting public safety and correcting the problem, whatever it takes,” said Public Works Director Jeremy Hockenbury.

The city says the additional grouting injections began Wednesday, Oct. 25, and are expected to take two weeks to complete and cure.

Access to the area is restricted to residents and authorized personnel.
