OCALA, FL (352today.com) – While it may be fun to visit the Lubee Bat Conservancy at the University of Florida, most of us don’t want to encounter the furry, winged creatures in our barns and garages.
So, as Florida’s bat maternity season nears, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds you to check for these unwanted guests in your home and on your property.
Beginning April 16, it becomes illegal to exclude bats from buildings due to the risk of trapping flightless pups inside.
Dates for Bat Exclusion
- Last legal day to exclude bats: April 15
- Bat maternity season: April 16 – August 14
- Exclusion permitted again: August 15
During this period, removing bats without a permit is prohibited to protect newborn bats that rely on their mothers for survival.
Why Bats Matter
Florida is home to 13 native bat species, including the endangered Florida bonneted bat. These insect-eating mammals are important for controlling pests like mosquitoes and contribute to healthy gardens and ecosystems.
How to Help and Stay Safe
- Don’t seal off roosts during maternity season
- Install bat houses to encourage safe roosting
- Preserve natural shelters like tree cavities and palm fronds
- Use exclusion devices only outside maternity season (Aug. 15-April 15)
If you notice bat activity, please visit MyFWC.com/Bats or call their regional FWC office for help and more tips on safe removal and bat-proofing homes.
