OCALA, FL (352today.com) – A major push to expand high-speed internet access in Marion County took center stage Friday at GoldMark Farm, where U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack joined local and state officials to discuss rural broadband infrastructure and Spectrumโ€™s ongoing investment in the region.

The event, held at T. Paul and Janelle Bulmahnโ€™s renowned thoroughbred facility, highlighted efforts under the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund and Spectrum’s rural expansion projects, which aim to connect underserved areas across Florida.

โ€œIt makes my heart sing,โ€ said Cammack. โ€œRepresenting Marion County, the fifth-largest county in the state of Floridaโ€”people don’t realize Marion County is 89% ruralโ€”and the importance of rural connectivity, it means opportunity.โ€

The initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide by bringing reliable, affordable internet to rural households, schools, and businesses. According to Cammack, more than 35,000 homes have already been connected through Spectrumโ€™s investment, and an additional 6,700 connections are now secured in Marion County.

โ€œWithout the partnership of a federal, state, private and local effort, it wouldn’t be possible,โ€ Cammack said.

Cammack, who serves on the House energy, commerce and agriculture committees, has been an active supporter of broadband legislation. State Sen. Stan McClain introduced her as a โ€œchampion for rural Floridaโ€ who understands the connectivity challenges facing many residents.

Spectrum, a subsidiary of Charter Communications, is investing $5 billion nationwide into broadband expansion. During the event, company representatives joined Cammack and community leaders in a Q&A session about Marion Countyโ€™s digital future.

โ€œItโ€™s not about who has jurisdiction, itโ€™s about getting the job done,โ€ Cammack added.

To mark the occasion, Spectrum announced several community donations in Cammackโ€™s honor, including $1 million to CASA of Marion County, $30,000 to United Way of Marion County, and five laptops to the Boys and Girls Club of Marion County.

Officials say the project will help boost educational access, business development and quality of life for thousands of Marion County residents living in rural areas.
