- Starting May 7, all U.S. air travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights.
- Travelers without a compliant ID will need a U.S. passport or other federally approved identification.
What is REAL ID?
- Established by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act aims to enhance national security and reduce identity fraud.
- A REAL ID is a state-issued license or ID card that meets federal security standards.
Is Your License REAL ID Compliant?
- REAL ID cards display one of the following symbols in the upper portion of the card:
- A gold or black star
- A white star in a gold circle
- Licenses without these markings will not be accepted for boarding commercial flights.
What to Do
- “Check your ID,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “If it doesn’t have the correct markings, set an appointment with the DMV soon.”
- Visit www.flhsmv.gov/locations to schedule an in-person visit.
- Renewals can be done up to 18 months before expiration.
