The study was done by the Milken Institute, an independent economic “think tank” dedicating to addressing global challenges in health, finance, and public policy. The institute emphasizes balance between economic growth and well-being.
Milken divides its research between large cities and small towns so that population size doesn’t skew results. Ocala is grouped with larger cities.
The Best-Performing Cities Index, published annually since 1999, evaluates a city’s effectiveness in driving economic growth while providing residents with essential services and infrastructure. Key metrics include wage growth, job creation, and housing affordability.
This year’s top cities had several common themes, including a strong job market and low income inequality. Sheilley credits Ocala’s performance to the businesses that continue to make investments in the area, boosting wages and attracting a skilled workforce.
