OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As a cornerstone of Ocala’s arts and culture scene, the Ocala Civic Theatre (The Civic) not only provides high-quality entertainment but also serves as a major economic driver for the region. However, with rising operational costs, critical facility repairs, and post-pandemic financial strain, the theater is asking the community to step up and support its future.

Executive Director Greg Thompson emphasizes that The Civic is more than just a theater – it’s a business that fuels the local economy through job creation, tourism, and community spending.

The Civic’s aging air-conditioning units have been in place for 40 years. The theater has already replaced two units but still faces significant costs to complete the necessary upgrades.

“The arts are a $15 billion industry in Florida,” Thompson says. “People don’t realize how much live theater contributes to local businesses. When people come to a show, they also dine at restaurants, buy gas, and sometimes even stay in hotels. We are an economic driver.”

Since July, The Civic has welcomed over 6,000 visitors from outside Marion County, putting it on track to bring in 10,000 out-of-town guests this fiscal year. These visitors spend money locally, boosting revenue for restaurants, hotels, and small businesses.

Facility Repairs and Financial Strain

Despite its economic contributions, The Civic is struggling with major facility challenges, including aging infrastructure that has been neglected for years.

“We inherited a building with 16 air-conditioning units, all 40 years old,” Thompson explains. “In Florida, that’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

Over the past four years, The Civic has spent $900,000 in cash on critical repairs, including replacing failing AC units, fixing roof leaks, and addressing safety hazards. The theater has successfully secured some grant funding, but it still needs significant financial support to complete necessary upgrades.

“We’ve been working tirelessly to secure funding, but we need the community’s help to get across the finish line,” Thompson said. “Every dollar donated goes directly into making this theater a sustainable part of Ocala’s future.”

How the Community Can Help

With rising maintenance costs and depleted cash reserves, The Civic is calling on local businesses, donors, and arts supporters to step up. Donations, sponsorships, and even purchasing tickets all contribute to keeping the theater afloat.

“If you love this theater, now is the time to show it,” Thompson says. “Whether it’s buying a ticket, making a donation, or spreading the word, every little bit makes a difference.”

To contribute, visit The Civic’s website, attend a show, or become a sustaining donor.
