OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Ocala Civic Theatre, a longstanding cultural institution, is stepping into a new era with a fresh identity. The organization is rebranding itself as “The Civic,” a move designed to solidify its presence within the community and create a more recognizable name for audiences.
For decades, the theater has been known by various names – Ocala Civic Theatre, OCT, and even just “the theater.” However, Executive Director Greg Thompson believes that a simpler, more distinct name will help audiences connect more easily with the organization.
“We want people to say, ‘We’re going to The Civic,’ the same way they say, ‘We’re going to The Reilly’ or ‘The Appleton,’” Thompson said. “It will make people curious about why it’s called ‘The Civic.’ It’s the heart of our name because it’s the heart of our community.”
The Need for Change
The rebranding comes as the organization celebrates its 75th anniversary, marking a time of growth and evolution. Thompson explained that part of the reason for the shift was the confusion surrounding the acronym “OCT.”
“Every time I put ‘OCT’ into a grant, I’d get questions like, ‘Oh, is this happening in October?’ It wasn’t clear to people outside of our immediate circle,” he said.
Additionally, the previous logo, featuring a stylized “C,” posed challenges in printing and branding consistency. The new logo will be bold, modern, and easier to reproduce, ensuring a more professional look across all platforms.
A Stronger Connection to the Community
Beyond a name change, the rebrand emphasizes The Civic’s deep-rooted commitment to Ocala. The theater has long been a pillar of the arts community, offering a diverse lineup of productions, educational programs, and outreach initiatives.

“We are evolving, and we are growing,” said Thompson. “We’re determined to be stronger and stronger.”
The name change is also part of a broader effort to attract new audiences, especially younger generations who respond well to short, memorable branding.
“It gives them a sense of ownership when they have a nickname for something that catches on, and they like it,” Thompson explained.
Looking Ahead
As The Civic moves forward, the goal is clear: maintain its rich legacy while adapting to the future.
“We’re still the same theater people love – we’re just making it easier for them to find us, support us, and be part of our story,” Thompson reinforces.
The Civic’s new branding will roll out in the coming months, with updated signage, marketing materials, and digital presence highlighting the change.
