OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Ocala Fire Rescue (OFR) is asking everyone to pay more attention to fire safety after dealing with two avoidable fires in the area. Both events happened on Sunday, Nov. 10, and show how crucial it is to be careful with heat sources and to follow fire safety guidelines.
OFR reports that the first fire broke out at 5:01 p.m. in NE Ocala, where a grease fire threatened a first-floor apartment and nearby units. The agency thanks the quick response of firefighters for containing the blaze. They say that no injuries were reported.
Just 45 minutes later, OFR reported another call from SW Ocala about a fire that started in a storage closet due to a generator. OFR stated that no one was hurt, but this incident highlighted the risks of storing generators incorrectly.
OFR reminds residents to prioritize fire safety.
Kitchen Fire Prevention
- Stay Alert: Never leave cooking food unattended. Turn off the stove if you need to leave the kitchen.
- Keep Flammable Items Away: Maintain a safe distance between cooking appliances and flammable items.
- Monitor Grease Build-up: Clean cooking surfaces regularly to avoid grease accumulation.
- Have a Fire Extinguisher Ready: Ensure you have a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it. (Remember to PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep).
Generator Fire Prevention
- Placement: Always place generators outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup and reduce fire risk.
- Avoid Enclosed Spaces: Never operate a generator inside a garage, basement, or any enclosed area.
- Proper Storage: When not in use, store generators in a dry, cool area away from combustible materials.
- Regular Maintenance: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the generator is in good working condition.
