OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Do you have some old tires you need to junk? If you’re an Ocala resident, you’ll get your chance to do that this weekend.
The city of Ocala is hosting a “Tire Amnesty Day” this Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. An amnesty day is the chance to dispose of tires for free. The city holds this event twice a year – once in the spring and again in the fall.
“We want to provide residents an opportunity to properly dispose of tires instead of them being dumped in vacant areas,” said Ashley Dobbs, the marketing and communications manager for the city of Ocala. “Tires also present a health hazard when they’re not properly disposed because they retain water which becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”
Disposal locations will be at the following:
- the corner of NE 14th Street and NE Eighth Avenue
- the Hampton Aquatic Fun Center located at 255 NW Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
There are some restrictions. The city says tires from businesses will not be accepted and there is a limit of 10 tires per resident.
In a news release, the city says the service is for people living within the Ocala city limits. “A driver’s license listing an address in the city limits may be requested,” warned the city.
Dobbs tells 352today that the collected tires are shredded and repurposed for a variety of other projects. “Any tires collected throughout the event is a win for both our environment and the beautification of our city,” said Dobbs.
