OCALA, FL (352today.com) – This week, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) will begin a campaign aimed at improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
It’s called High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) operations, and it will kick off this Thursday, Sept. 21, and run through next May.
“We have identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and bicycle-related crashes have occurred and we’re responding by deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to increase awareness of, and compliance with, Florida traffic safety laws,” said OPD in a release.
Officers will be looking for drivers who are speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks or any other dangerous violation. Officers will also be watching for pedestrians crossing the street illegally, failing to yield to motorists who have the right of way and for bicyclists riding against traffic or at night without lights. OPD will provide free bicycle lights to those who need them.
