OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Ocala Police Department (OPD) says a woman is behind bars after her baby died from a drug overdose.
OPD says on January 24, they arrested 33-year-old Kacy Kincaid on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and drug trafficking, adding that the arrest stemmed from an investigation that began on October 12, 2023. On that day, OPD officers responded to AdventHealth and discovered a nine-month-old child unresponsive. OPD says the child was later pronounced dead.
The police department says at that time, the cause of the baby’s death was unclear, but Kincaid, the child’s mother, had “five grams of fentanyl in her possession.”
Detectives say when they tried to interview Kincaid, she seemed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and could not hold a conversation. OPD detectives say they then obtained a search warrant for a sample of Kincaid’s blood to be tested, and she was transported to the Marion County Jail on a drug trafficking charge.
Police say they later received a report from the Medical Examiner’s Office which showed that the child had died from fentanyl, methamphetamine, and xylazine toxicity. They say Kincaid’s blood sample also contained fentanyl along with other substances. The five grams that police found in October was tested and they say it indicated the “presence of the same xylazine compound” that was in in her daughter’s blood.
“Drug addiction is a serious issue that can have devastating consequences. It’s unfortunate that an innocent child lost their life due to fentanyl. We urge everyone to stay away from drugs and seek help if they are struggling with addiction. According to jail records, Kincaid was also arrested in 2017 and charged with violating her probation in Brevard and Pinellas counties for possession of a controlled substance. There was also a warrant out for her arrest in Pinellas County for driving under the influence and causing an accident involving property damage/injury.
Records show when she was arrested in October, she was also charged with violating her probation in Sumter County for willful child abuse.
