The Growing Need for Dementia Education
Dementia affects millions worldwide, with Alzheimer’s disease being a leading cause of death. In Florida alone, over 580,000 residents live with Alzheimer’s, and the number is expected to surpass 700,000 by 2025. Marion County’s aging population mirrors this trend, with an estimated 14,000 residents over 65 affected by dementia.

The Nancy Renyhart Dementia Education Program offers crucial resources, including the Virtual Dementia Tour®, which helps caregivers and community members understand the challenges faced by those living with dementia. The program also hosts Memory Café events, fostering meaningful connections between caregivers and their loved ones. Thanks to the vision of John Renyhart, who established the program in memory of his wife Nancy, these efforts continue to grow and impact countless lives.
The Capital Campaign: Building a Center for Dementia Education
Hospice of Marion County and Empath Health are embarking on a $1.5 million capital campaign to establish the HMC Center for the Nancy Renyhart Dementia Education Program on the Helen “Mimi” Walker Campus. This innovative center will provide essential caregiver education and adult day care services. With $375,000 already allocated by Florida legislators and a matching donation opportunity up to $500,000, the campaign aims to transform dementia care in the region.
