CRYSTAL RIVER, FL (352today.com) โ€“ Big changes are on the horizon for one of Crystal Riverโ€™s most iconic properties.

Plantation Resort, a local staple since 1962, has officially been sold, with the $19 million transaction closing Monday afternoon. Crystal River Mayor Joe Meek shared the news, calling it a โ€œhuge momentโ€ for the city and expressing gratitude for the team that helped make it happen.

โ€œThe city has worked with the new buyers over the last few months, and there are great things to come,โ€ Meek said. โ€œIโ€™m excited to see the Plantation return to greatness.โ€

According to Meek, the new owners plan to invest heavily in renovating both the hotel and golf course. The resortโ€™s golf amenities, including the course, driving range, and clubhouse, will be overhauled and reimagined to become a premier destination on their own.

As for the hotel, Meek said the buyers are committed to a full refurbishment and remodel of the propertyโ€™s structures to offer โ€œa first-class resort experienceโ€ for both residents and visitors.

The upgrades come after Hurricane Helene forced the property to temporarily close for repairs. Now, with fresh ownership and ambitious plans, the Plantation Resort is poised for a comeback.

Perhaps most notably, Meek teased a major announcement to come: โ€œThe new buyers will be making an announcement in the near future on exciting news of a large nationwide hotel brand that will manage and operate the resort. It will be big news, and take this property to the next level!โ€

Originally opened in 1962, the Plantation was purchased in 1975 by W.W. Caruth Jr., who was drawn to the resortโ€™s โ€œbeautiful natural setting and Old South charm.โ€ With this new chapter, Meek said, that legacy will be preserved and expanded.

โ€œOnce reopened, the resort will bring hundreds of jobs,โ€ Meek added. โ€œThese are very exciting times for Crystal River.โ€
