OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Sandbags sites are popping up across the 352 area in preparation for Tropical Storm Idalia to make landfall as a major hurricane on Wednesday according to the National Hurricane Center.

Here is the current list of open sites in the 352 region:

Alachua County will provide both premade sandbags and self-serve sites Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 29. Sand and sandbags are provided, but residents will have to bring their own shovels to the self-serve site at Citizens Field. More information is included with each site.

  • Alachua County Public Works administration building (405 NW 39 Ave.) will provide premade sandbags (1o per vehicle) from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Go north on NW 6 Street and turn right onto NW 39 Avenue.
  • Citizens Field (1000 NE Waldo Rd.) will provide fillable bags (10 per vehicle) from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Access the site from NE 12 Avenue via Waldo Road, or travel south on NE 15 Street via NE 16 Avenue.
  • Wayside Park (11855 NW US 441, Gainesville) will provide premade sandbags (10 per person) from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Citrus County full-service sites are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m with a limit of 12 bags per vehicle. Self-serve sites are open 24 hours but are not monitored overnight for availability of supplies. Sand and sandbags are provided, but residents will have to bring their own shovels to self-serve sites. Contact the Citrus County Road Maintenance Division at 352-527-7610 with any questions.

Sumter County will have self-service sand and sandbags available starting Monday at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sandbag operations will be available according to weather conditions. Hernando County Fire Rescue has provided the following tips on filling and stacking your own sandbags at self-serve sites.
  • Only fill bags one-half to two-thirds of the way full. Over-filled bags will result in a leaky sandbag wall.
  • Stack sandbags so the seams between the bags are staggered.
  • Tuck the top of each bag under to ensure the bag is sealed by its own weight.
