MARION, LEVY COUNTIES (352today.com) – The Florida Forest Service – Waccasassa Forestry Center is conducting two prescribed burns today, Monday, June 23, to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk.

  • In Levy County, a 39-acre burn is taking place in Goethe State Forest, near the Cow Creek area south of SE County Road 326 and west of SE County Road 337.
  • In Marion County, a larger 420-acre prescribed burn is being conducted in Indian Lake State Forest, west of County Road 326 and north of State Road 40.

Prescribed burns are the planned use of fire under specific weather conditions by trained professionals. These controlled burns help eliminate overgrown vegetation, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce the risk of severe wildfires.
