OCALA, FL (352today.com) – On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the Professional Firefighters of Marion County (PFFMC) upheld their annual tradition of delivering turkeys to on-duty crews working Thanksgiving Day. Organized by PFFMC board member James “Butcher” Butscher and a team of ten off-duty members, the initiative, known as the “Worky Turkey,” ensures that first responders have a festive meal while serving their community.

This tradition began four years ago, spearheaded by PFFMC board member Nicolas Zancanata. It has since become a cherished yearly event, symbolizing gratitude and support for the sacrifices firefighters make, particularly during the holiday season.

“This time of year can be very stressful for our first responders, and I am honored to continue the tradition that Zanc (Nicolas Zancanata) started by helping to relieve some of the stress,” says Butscher.

To prepare for Thanksgiving Day, pre-cooked and thawed turkeys were delivered to every fire station across Marion County’s 1,663 square miles on Nov. 27. This effort ensures that on-duty crews can easily prepare dinner while remaining available to respond to emergencies.

This year, the PFFMC extended the holiday spirit beyond fire stations. PFFMC President Rolin Boyd, joined by David Knowles of 1-800boardup.com, expanded the program to include Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) Public Safety Communications. Dispatch crews on duty received Thanksgiving dinners as a gesture of appreciation for their vital role in emergency services.

“Our members are happy to have a supporting community that appreciates their sacrifice, and if we can empower and support our members to continue the service they provide, I am all for it,” Boyd states.

The PFFMC, a labor union representing 575 active and retired first responders from MCFR, remains committed to improving the lives of its members and the citizens they serve. Through initiatives like the “Worky Turkey,” the organization underscores its dedication to supporting firefighters both on and off duty, especially during the holiday season.
