OCALA, FL (352today.com) – A rabies alert has been issued in Marion County in response to a confirmed case of rabies in a cat.
The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) says the cat was killed in the Reddick area off Northwest 118 St. Road in Marion County on Tuesday, July 9.
DOH-Marion is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area and is advising residents and visitors to be aware that rabies is currently present in the wild animal population.
The rabies alert is for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Marion County:
- Northern boundary: Northwest 125 St. Road
- Southern boundary: Northwest 110th St.
- Eastern boundary: Interstate 75
- Western boundary: County Road 225A
Health experts say people and domestic animals should always avoid physical contact with wild animals like raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, bobcats, coyotes.
The DOH says if you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment will protect you from the risks associated.

Additionally, health experts say if an animal bites your pet or livestock, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8700.
