*Updated to include video of the police escort for K-9 Leo.
OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has made a solemn post on its Facebook page that simply says “End of Watch: K-9 Leo.”
A nearly three-minute video from Sheriff Billy Woods accompanies the text announcing the passing of the nearly 5-year-old Belgian Malinois that was shot in the line of duty on Saturday.

The sheriff says Leo was responding to protect his handler and the other deputies as a man who they were attempting to arrest on a battery by strangulation charge began shooting at them.
“Leo did what he was trained to do and that is to fearlessly defend and protect those deputies, to charge directly at danger,” said Woods. “Leo maintained that fighting spirit however his injuries were too severe to overcome.”
Deputies shot and killed 44-year-old Jeremy Bradsher at a home in the 900 block of NE 144th Ct. in Silver Springs during the confrontation.
Leo was raced to the UF Veterinary Hospital on Saturday and underwent surgery for his injuries. The department hoped and prayed Leo would pull through.
Woods says a unique bond exists between a K-9 and his handler. He described it as one of “loyalty, love and unwavering determination.”
In the video, the sheriff thanked the community for all the prayers and support.
MCSO has also changed out its Facebook profile picture and cover photo to one with a black band across a badge indicating the loss of one of their own.
The video ends with Taps and a photo of K-9 Leo with his handler, Cpl. Justin Tortora.
A convoy of law enforcement escorted K-9 Leo back to Ocala on Tuesday from Gainesville where he died at UF Veterinary Hospital. Vincent Hampton noticed the procession and captured video of it on Northwest 13th Street in Gainesville.
We invite you to share condolences and comments for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on our Facebook page.
