Original story 10.13.24 at 12:10 p.m.: In preparation for potential flooding along the Withlacoochee River, local authorities have opened sandbag stations and issued important flood warnings. If you live in a flood zone, authorities are asking you to take precautions as water levels continue to rise.

Hernando County Sandbag Sites:

Two stations are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (weather permitting). You must bring your own shovels to fill the bags.

Proper Sandbag Use Tips:
  • Filling: Fill bags half to two-thirds full.
  • Avoid Overfilling: Overfilled bags will cause leaks in the sandbag wall.
  • Stacking: Stagger seams between bags and tuck the top of each bag under for a secure seal.
Flood Warnings and Precautions:
  • The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Warning for the Withlacoochee River. The river is currently at Minor Flood Stage (9.5 feet) and may rise to 11 feet by Monday morning.
  • No structural damage is expected at this stage, but you should remain vigilant and monitor river conditions closely.
