OCALA, FL (352today.com) – May is National Bike Month, and AAA – The Auto Club Group is urging everyone to prioritize safety as more people take to the roads on bicycles for fitness, fun, or commuting.

“Whether riding for sport, leisure, recreation, or exercise, it’s important for cyclists and motorists to share the road,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Whether you are on two wheels or four, following safety guidelines can save lives and make our roads safer for everyone.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,166 bicyclists died and nearly 50,000 were injured in crashes in 2023. AAA emphasizes that many of these incidents are preventable through increased awareness and shared responsibility.

For bicyclists, AAA recommends always wearing a helmet, obeying traffic laws, staying visible, and avoiding distractions like headphones. Riders should also be courteous to pedestrians, signaling when passing.

Motorists are encouraged to stay alert, especially near intersections, and allow at least three feet when passing cyclists. AAA also reminds drivers to be extra cautious around children, who may be less predictable on bikes.

By working together and following these tips, AAA says that both drivers and cyclists can help make local roads safer this spring and beyond.
