OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The timeless tale of mystery, romance, and self-discovery comes to life on stage as Daddy Long Legs enchants audiences at the Ocala Civic Theatre from Feb. 6-23. Adapted from Jean Webster’s 1912 novel and inspired by the 1955 film starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron, this charming two-person musical promises an unforgettable theatrical experience.
Jerusha Abbott, portrayed by Megan Taylor, is the “oldest orphan in the John Grier Home.” Set in 1908, Jerusha’s life takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious benefactor—known only as “Mr. Smith”—decides to fund her college education. His one condition? Jerusha must write him letters throughout her studies, though he will never reply or reveal his identity.
The nickname “Daddy Long Legs” is born after Jerusha glimpses the shadow of her benefactor—tall, spindly, and enigmatic. Little does she know, “Mr. Smith” is actually Jervis Pendleton, played by James R. Taylor III, a shy yet wealthy young man who shares her academic world through his niece’s college connection.
As Jerusha blossoms into a talented writer, she unknowingly deepens her bond with Jervis through their letters. When they meet in person, sparks fly, and a tangled web of emotions begins to form. Will Jervis confess his true identity? Can Jerusha reconcile her feelings for the men in her life and find her own path to happiness?
Directed and choreographed by Greg Thompson, with music direction by Jason Bartosic, Daddy Long Legs features a captivating score and a heartwarming story set against a picturesque turn-of-the-century backdrop. The creative team includes scenic designer Mihai Ciupe, costume designer Amanda Jones, and lighting designer David Castaneda, among others.
The show runs for 15 performances: Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults and $17 for ages 18 and younger, with a family-friendly rating of G.
Don’t miss this delightful musical that unveils “the secret of happiness.” Tickets can be purchased online at ocalacivictheatre.com or by calling the box office at (352) 236-2274, open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We can’t wait to share Daddy Long Legs with you. Some of you may have seen the movie that inspired it, but you might not be as familiar with the stage musical. Both are based on Jean Webster’s novel of the same name, serialized from April to September 1912 in Ladies’ Home Journal and published in book form in October 1912,” says Executive & Artistic Director Greg Thompson, who is also the director and choreographer of Daddy Long Legs.
While the novel has seen several adaptations over the years, the Ocala Civic Theatre’s production remains faithful to the original story’s era and setting. Unlike the 1955 film starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron, which modernized the setting and added dance numbers, the stage musical stays true to the early 20th-century atmosphere and features music and lyrics by Paul Gordon.
OCT chose Daddy Long Legs for its compelling narrative, enchanting music, and the unique opportunity it presents as a two-person show. The production is an ideal choice for the season, providing an intimate and heartfelt experience for audiences. Additionally, the cast members—who are married in real life—bring an extra layer of chemistry to the performance, making it all the more special.
Greg Thompson highlights several standout songs, including “The Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home,” Jerusha’s lively opening number, and “Charity” by Jervis, a tune that lingers in the mind long after the show ends. Other notable songs include the romantic duet “The Color of Your Eyes,” the powerful solo “Not Like Other Girls,” and the heartfelt final duet, “All This Time.”
