OCALA, FL (352today.com) – If you’re planning to stop by the Starbucks at 2701 SW College Road in Ocala, there’s a new rule you’ll want to keep in mind: hanging out or using the restroom will now require a purchase.

On Monday, Starbucks announced a reversal of its 2018 open-door policy. A new code of conduct will be posted in all company-owned North American stores, emphasizing that access to Starbucks’ spaces is reserved for paying customers.

The updated rules prohibit discrimination, harassment, smoking, vaping, drug use, outside alcohol, and panhandling. Violators may be asked to leave, and law enforcement could be called if necessary.

“We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores,” said Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson to the Associated Press (AP). “By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone.”

This change follows challenges employees have faced with disruptive behavior, including drug use and safety concerns. Starbucks previously closed 16 stores nationwide in 2022 due to safety issues.

The shift could affect your day if you often stop by for a casual meet-up, to work without making a purchase, or to use the restroom during errands. Be prepared to order a coffee or snack to avoid being turned away.

The company says employees will receive training to ensure the policy is enforced fairly and effectively.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol emphasized that the goal is to restore a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere while addressing safety and sales concerns.

Whether you’re a regular customer or a quick stop-in visitor, this new policy may reshape your Starbucks experience.
