MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – A Summerfield man was arrested and charged with the murder of another man from a shooting death back in September 2023.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says they arrested 38-year-old Joseph Edward Horrighs on Tuesday.

Deputies say on September 21, 2023, they responded to a shooting and crash at the 2500 block of SE 174th Place. When they arrived at the scene, they say they found 56-year-old Darius Dunyel Jones dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Detectives say during the investigation, the discovered that Jones picked up Horrighs and another person and drove them to a local Walmart. MCSO says Horrighs was under the influence of methamphetamine and became paranoid about being at that Walmart.

The sheriff’s office says they left the store and an argument began between Horrighs and the third unnamed person, prompting that person to leave.

MCSO says this left Jones and Horrighs together for nearly 20 minutes prior to the deadly shooting. Deputies say when they arrived at the scene, they found Jones dead.

The sheriff’s office says after executing a search warrant, MCSO detectives found shell casings matching the same ones found at the crime scene. They say witness testimonies and additional evidence led detectives to present the case to the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
