SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a person making scam calls pretending to be a deputy.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scammer tells victims to avoid arrest, they must send the caller money, gift cards or cryptocurrency.
The calls have been reported from various numbers, and the sheriff’s office received multiple reports on Aug. 10.
“We want to remind the public that law enforcement agencies do not solicit payments from subjects. If you receive such a call, be aware it is a scam, and do not send money, buy gift cards, purchase cryptocurrency, or provide the caller with personal information,” said the sheriff’s office.
Deputies are asking anyone with any questions about the legitimacy of a call from law enforcement to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 352-793-2621.
