SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – It’s that time again. The time for you to clean out the garage, shed or storage unit and get rid of any unneeded household electronics and hazardous waste.
Sumter County is making it easy on you to discard those items by hosting its first Amnesty Day of the year.

The Amnesty Day will be this Saturday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lake Okahumpka Park in Wildwood.
Residents are encouraged to take this opportunity to discard eligible electronics and hazardous items.
Here’s a list of items you CAN drop off:
- Automotive fluids/batteries
- Cleaners
- Fertilizers
- Fluorescent lamps & Mercury-containing devices
- Fungicides
- Gas & gas cans
- Herbicides
- Household electronics (TVs, VCRs, computers, etc.)
- Latex and oil-based paints
- Paint removers & thinners
- Pesticides
- Pool chemicals
- Propane tanks up to 25 pounds
- Rechargeable household batteries
- Smoke detectors
- Solvents
- Wood preservatives
Items you CANNOT drop off:
- Biological/infectious waste
- Empty paint cans
- Explosives
- Radioactive waste
- Tires
How to package/transport chemicals
- Do not mix chemicals together
- Keep products in their original containers with labels
- Place containers in cardboard boxes to prevent breakage
- Place any leaky containers in a clear plastic bag and then transport in a box with newspaper
- Put boxes in the trunk or in back of vehicles away from passengers
County officials say more than a thousand Sumter County residents participated in the four Amnesty Day events held last year. They say each year, residents dropped off over 100,000 pounds of recyclable material and over 50,000 pounds of hazardous waste.
If you miss the Amnesty Day this weekend, the next one will be held on Saturday, April 6, and Lake Okahumpka Park.
