WILDWOOD, FL (352today.com) – A road in The Villages is now stabilized after holes appeared in the asphalt last month.

Since August, engineers for the city of Wildwood, in conjunction with the help of a geotechnical construction company called Earth Tech, LLC, have been investigating and repairing the ‘surface depressions’ that appeared at 5980 Scardino Street in the Village of Monarch Grove. The city says geotechnical testing was quickly initiated to determine the extent of the collapse and how to address it.

The resulting report recommended a series of subsurface grout injections, according to the city of Wildwood. Engineers injected a total of 351.3 cubic yards of concrete at 21 sites along the road. The largest hole was 7′ deep, but the subsurface injections ranged from 25′ to 55′ deep. The injections were then cured and evaluated for safety, and the road has been officially deemed safe.

The city of Wildwood is now evaluating utility damage and will begin making any necessary repairs.

“We have been in regular contact with residents of Scardino Street to keep them informed since the first reports came in,” said Public Works Director Jeremy Hockenbury. “We appreciate their patience as we work through the next steps of this process to ensure all repair work is done safely and to the specifications demanded by our team of experts.”

Scardino Street is no longer considered a public safety concern, but it remains restricted to residents and authorized personnel. When utility and final asphalt repairs are complete, the street will reopen for through traffic.
