LEVY COUNTY, FL (352today) – Too close to call.

Elections where the margin of victory are so narrow, where a decisive winner can’t be determined are subject to a recount. That happened in more than one race in Levy County on Tuesday.

A recount will be conducted for Williston City Council Seat Group C and Levy County Commission District 5 on Saturday.

Johhny Hiers received 19 more votes than Zach Bullock in the race for Levy County Commissioner District 5. However, there was a much closer race in the City of Williston, where Meredith Paige Martin leads Nicholas Stark by only two votes.

Hiers, whose family goes back more than 170 years in Levy County, received 5,063 votes compared to the 5,044 voters who cast their ballots in support of Bullock.

“It was a real close race, based on the final vote tally, but I’m happy with the outcome,” said Hiers. “I’m ready to get to work. I think I’ll represent the citizens of the county very well. I want to use common sense, that was one of the main statements of where I stand on the issues as far as my platform. It’s been a long grind since January. We’re happy that we have a win.”

Martin was appointed to the seat on an interim basis earlier this year, after Jerry Robinson resigned over Form 6 concerns.

Martin says she loves serving the community and calls her time on the council a positive learning experience.

“I realized I had very little understanding of how the city worked as an organization and as a governing body, and how it even played a role in minor decisions. We have to sign off on approving grant applications and vehicles for the police department,” said Martin. “I realized how important it was to have a full city council, and not have a city council that was functional because we didn’t have enough people… I’ve learned a lot and I’m really passionate about Williston, trying to keep this small town feel in Williston, and we’re facing development and growth and it’s important to me to be able to manage that.”
