GILCHRIST COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The ride home from school was likely scary for nearly two dozen Gilchrist County students. The school bus they were riding was involved in an accident.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says the accident happened around 3:30 p.m. on County Road 232 (CR 232), east of State Road 47 (SR 47).
Troopers say the bus was headed east and preparing to stop to offload a passenger when a tractor trailer driving the opposite direction wasn’t stopping in time. FHP says the truck driver had to take “evasive action to the right to avoid colliding with a separate vehicle that was stopped ahead.”
Crash investigators say when the truck ran off the road onto the shoulder, its trailer flipped onto its side and hit the rear of the bus on the driver’s side.
Troopers say there 23 children on the bus at the time of the crash. Remarkably, no injuries were reported.
State troopers identified the truck driver as a 36-year-old man from Chiefland.
